Drugs addiction is one of the most vexing and pervasive problems that almost all the countries have faced. The consequence of such addiction can be devastating. The effects of drug addiction are felt on many levels.

Individuals who use drugs experience physical effects due to their drug addiction. People with drug addiction may experience anxiety, fatigue, depression, and a strong desire to use more cocaine to alleviate the feelings of the crash. Many drug users engage in criminal activity, such as burglary and prostitution, to raise the money to buy drugs, and some drugs are associated with violent behavior.

Family and friends feel the effects of drug addiction as well. The user who are preoccupied with the drug usually have changeable mood, which is likely to cause marital problems and poor work performance or dismissal. Drug addiction can disrupt family life and create destructive patterns of codependency.

Drug Abuse affects society in many ways. Drug users are more likely than nonusers to have occupational accidents, endangering themselves and those around them. Drug-related crime can disrupt neighborhoods due to violence among drug dealers, threats to residents, and the crimes of the addicts themselves. In addition, drug addiction will cost billions of dollars each year. Heroin use alone is responsible for the epidemic number of new cases of HIV/AIDS and drug addicted infants born each year. Drug addiction is responsible for decreased job productivity and attendance, increased healthcare costs, and an escalation of domestic violence and violent crimes

Drug addiction has many negative physiological health effects, ranging from minor issues like digestion problems or respiratory infections, to potentially fatal diseases. The effects depend on the drug and on the amount, method and frequency of use. The upshot is that regular drug abuse or sustained exposure to a drug can cause physiological dependence, which means that when the person stops taking drugs, he/she experiences physical withdrawal symptoms and a craving for the drug.

Drug addiction can cause brain damage. Drug addiction affects the way the brain functions and alters its responses to the world. How drug abuse will affect your behavior, actions, feelings and motivations is unpredictable. By meddling in the natural ways the brain functions, abusers exposes themselves to risks they may not even have imagined.

Drugs addiction leads to psychological and physiological dependence. The term drugs abuse is used to indicate the excessive consumption of a drug, regardless of whether an individual is truly dependent on it. Drugs abusers are generally immature, suffering from mental and physical health hazards, emotionally disturbed and psychopathic in nature

I want to help you rid your life of gambling. This is a tough problem to live with because it is hard to quit. Many people try to go cold turkey, but that is surprisingly difficult to make work. Gamblers are psychologically driven to want to do this and there is a pay off in your brain for doing it. I think it is more important than ever for gamblers to get a hold of this problem in these tough economic times. When people and families need every single dollar, you can’t be blowing it in a casino or in some sort of internet gambling. I’m going to help you rid your life of gambling.

This is an addiction, but often people use that as an excuse not to deal with it. You don’t do things because it is an addition. You do things because you get some sort of emotional pay off and that is what you’re addicted too. You need to identify what you’re looking for as pay off. That’s the key to getting past this problem. Maybe you’re someone that likes the adrenalin rush of putting a lot on the table and winning. Maybe you do it to avoid other problems in your life.

If you want to rid your life of gambling, you have to able to identify the real reason you do it and find another way to get the pay off. If you do it for the rush, maybe you should find a hobby that gives you a rush. If you do it to avoid dealing with a failing relationship, maybe you should try and fix it. Identifying the root cause of gambling is essential to ridding yourself of it.

Rosemary Grace Brooks asked:

Sex addiction is an illness that is experienced worldwide by men and women from different backgrounds and cultures. When a person is a *** addict, they suffer from a disease which is incurable, progressive and capable of destroying the lives of not only the sufferer but of their families as well.

Sex addiction can be managed with a recovery programme and therapy but whilst in the grips of this addiction, sufferers cannot escape their obsessive and compulsive behaviour. Often *** addiction is experienced with other addictive behaviours such as drug use and eating disorders. They are all behaviours of the same disease of addiction.

Similar to other addictions such as drug addiction and alcohol addiction, *** addiction is based on obsessive and compulsive needs. The behaviour of a *** addict can include repeated empty affairs, compulsive masturbation, frequent use of *********** and other *** services and in extreme cases can even progress to exhibitionism, voyeurism, child molestation and ****.

Sex addicts however are not bad people. Their condition is not a moral failing: It is a spiritual unrest.

Why is *** Addiction So Destructive?

In some Twelve Step fellowship support groups, ‘bottom line behaviour’ is identified. Bottom line behaviour is a term used to define the specific *** addict’s behaviours which they act out on.

Most *** addicts experience ‘intrigue’ which is the mental preoccupation with sexual acts. Objectifying people, constant obsession with sexual acts, flirting and generally spending much time with the preoccupation of *** is the mental state of a *** addict. These obsessions are then followed by the compulsive acting out on sexual behaviours.

Sex addiction is progressive. It may begin with compulsive ************ and an affinity for pornography which then develops into a serious problem involving the use of prostitutes, money troubles, families being broken up and unemployment, further to which ******* can be a consequence.

When *** addiction has progressed to a severe level, the *** addict is unable to resist the impulse to act out on their sexual behaviours. They become more involved with the behaviours for longer periods of time, with greater intensity and violence to have the desired effect, resulting in their responsibilities being neglected. Without being able to fulfil their obsession and act out on the behaviour, they become irritable, restless and angry. Despite the desire to abstain and stop the sexual compulsivity because their lives are beginning to crumble, they are unable to do so. They are powerless over their sexual addiction and their lives begin to become completely unmanageable.

Treatment

Sex addiction is treatable, but incurable. Yet with therapy, abstinence from the disordered sexual behaviours and maintaining a programme of recovery on a daily basis, a *** addict can regain a normal life again. Inpatient treatment in a counselling centre can be extremely beneficial to a *** addict seeking help for their problem. Many *** addicts will be in a state of denial about their problem but once they have admitted that they have a problem, they can begin the healing recovery process.

Inpatient treatment will usually provide group therapy and individual therapy which have been found to be the most successful methods of dealing with *** addiction. Treatment facilities are a safe place for *** addicts to recover where they can process their condition with experienced and understanding people. They need never be alone in their struggle again.

Whilst in a rehabilitation centre, a *** addict will need to begin working a daily programme of recovery, such as the Twelve Steps. There are fellowships which are devoted to helping *** addicts receive support and help in their behaviour. For a *** addict to be abstinent from the behaviour does not mean that they must stay celibate for the rest of their life – it is a normal human behaviour to engage in sexual acts, just not ones which begin to destroy their lives and keep them in a terrible cycle of shame and self loathing. A *** addict who turns to celibacy as a way of dealing with the problem is not addressing the root cause – similar to a ‘dry drunk’.

With proper treatment and therapy, coupled with a programme of recovery, a *** addict can begin to lead a happy and normal life again. A recovery programme will keep a *** addict aware of their behaviours and dangerous situations which may lead to relapse and will teach them tools to cope with daily life.

David Roppo asked:

According to the National Enquirer Lindsay Lohan is “out of control” when it comes to drugs and alcohol. The National Enquirer is now claiming that a friend of Lindsay’s told the publication that despite having a month in rehab earlier in the year, the actress went wild at the recent Coachella music festival: “Lindsay’s drugging and drinking is out of control! She learned nothing in rehab.”

In an article published by Vanity Fair Magazine Lindsay Lohan had finally come clean on rumors about her incredibly shrinking body, by admitting that her low body weight was due to bulimia.

It would seem from the above-mentioned publications that Ms. Lohan is not only suffering from a drug addiction, but also an eating disorder! One would have to wonder what causes someone that has captured fame and fortune to suddenly fall prey to the trap of addiction?

Well, lets take a moment to examine Lindsay’s upbringing!

Lindsay’s former bodyguard Tony Almeida was quoted in the latest issue of In Touch as stating; If Lindsay Lohan’s life is a train wreck, she’s got no one to blame but her parents. “Lindsay was a very sweet and talented kid, but she didn’t stand a chance against her parents and the Hollywood system,” he told the magazine.

Sex, drugs and ******* attempts — according to Tony, Lindsay tried it all while underage and under the neglectful watch of her legal guardians, Mom and Dad, the story reports. Even when her soon-to-be absentee daddy, Michael, did pay attention to Lindsay’s bad behavior, the punishment was worse than the crime.

Annoyed with Lindsay’s late-night whining, the magazine reports that “Michael slammed on the brakes and dragged her out of the car, pushed her up on the hood, screamed at her and called her a ****,” Tony recalls. “I got in the middle of it and pulled him off.”

Like the stand-up dad he is, Michael claims ignorance of the incident. Still, Pops Lohan told In Touch, “If I did do it, if that’s the worst anyone can say about me, then it’s not too bad.” Now that’s fatherly advice you can take to rehab.

Meanwhile, mom Dina often “let her do whatever she wanted, just to keep her happy and working . . . [At her 16th birthday party] Lindsay drank whatever she wanted – I saw her drinking beer and mixed drinks with my own eyes [without Dina's intervention].” As Lindsay’s manager, Dina – who was desperate to become a star herself – received 10 percent of her income. “Lindsay was the family cash cow – and she resented it,” Almeida claims. “They counted on her to pay their bills . . . I saw Lindsay exhausted, begging her mother for some time off.” Young Lindsay’s parents looked the other way as she began a life of boozing, boys and drugs. When she was 15, they allowed her to share a room with her then-14-year-old boyfriend, Aaron Carter, at Loews in Miami Beach. Almeida relates, “They knew Lindsay was sleeping in Aaron’s room. But they seemed happy she had chosen somebody who could benefit her singing career.”

It is quite apparent that a whole host of dysfunctional patterns took place in the Lohan household. Both parents were obviously uninvolved in Lindsay’s life, and at times were verbally abusive, and inadequetly parented their children.

I am not at all surprised that Lindsay has fallen prey to not one but two addictions since the emotional pain caused by family dysfunction is at the root of all addictive behavior.

Are you suffering from addiction?

When you were a child, did your parents verbally abuse you? Were you physically or sexually abused? Did one or both of your parents suffer from alcoholism or drug abuse? Did your parents control or manipulate you? Did your parents show up part-time for a job that required full time parenting? Like most, you may not realize how much these family dysfunctions have destroyed your self-esteem or why they are the root cause of your addiction! You see, there are many types of addictions, and they all have the same common denominator’ family dysfunction!

As a life coach, I have helped addicted clients learn the secrets to overcoming addiction, and I have established a unique five-step process as a potential benchmark for recovery. My success has overwhelmingly convinced me that the mainstream approach to addiction is fundamentally amiss because formal treatment programs attempt to defeat the symptoms rather than address the core issue.

Addictive behavior is a symptom of the emotional trauma caused by family dysfunction. Therefore, when you fix the root of the problem habitual behavior becomes repulsive. Instead, the mainstream philosophy has followed a pattern of bombarding the public with multiple theories and confusing psychobabble, neither of which address liberation from family dysfunction nor restoring self-esteem. These treatments not only fail to preserve anonymity, but they also fail in excess of ninety percent of the time!

The following is a brief outline of the 5 steps to addiction freedom. Prior to following these steps or any addiction recovery program, take the necessary time to ascertain whether you require the additional support of an addiction counselor or medical attention regarding withdrawal.

1. Step One: Unearth the Square Root

Family dysfunction is the common denominator, or square root of all addictive behavior, and until it is brought to the forefront and confronted nothing will change! This is by far the most important and critical step of the entire process. There are two parts to step one, and they are as follows:

A. Uncovering your family dysfunction

Physical abuse

Sexual abuse

Verbal abuse

Alcoholic parent

Controlling parent

Inadequate parenting

B. Confront the parent or parents responsible for the dysfunction

The thought of confronting the person that is responsible for your emotional trauma is one the most frightening situations you will face. However, it is also the most liberating and empowering thing you’ll ever do! Why do you need to confront your parent or parents? Well, first let me clarify the meaning of the word confront and in what context we are using this term. Confronting the person does not at all mean that you should verbally attack them for your misfortunes. On the contrary, you are not doing this for them. You are doing it for you! The confrontation is not meant to be an attack, but it is rather a chance for you to set the record straight and drop the emotional baggage that you’ve been toting around.

2. Step Two: Remove your Emotional Baggage

You have completed step one and have confronted your parent or parents. This in and of itself will have removed much of the pain and emotional trauma. However, to fully free yourself from their emotional stronghold, it will be necessary to find forgiveness in your heart for a family member that has committed an atrocity against you. Forgive! How can I forgive someone that committed these atrocities against me? Many people have a misconception about forgiveness. Forgiveness is not reconciliation! There is a drastic difference between the two. Reconciliation would mean that you have accepted and submit to their behavior and have agreed to try and continue the relationship under those circumstances. Forgiveness means that you merely give up or cease the resentment of the offender.

Step Three: Cure Wounditis

Without question, partaking in habitual behavior not only causes you pain but, it inflicts pain on the people around you as well. However, do not allow what you have done in the past or what others have done to you, to cause you to live in fear of what the future holds. The past is the past, it is over, and living in it does not serve anyone well. Live in the present moment, be kind to yourself, and learn to love yourself. How can you love someone else if you don’t love yourself? The answer is you can’t!!! It isn’t a big secret that you’re feeling shame and guilt for what you’ve done. In fact, you’re probably questioning right now as to whether you should be punished for your past actions. Well guess what, its ok! God doesn’t punish people, we punish ourselves. God is a loving and forgiving being. So if you thought that you would continue to punish yourself with shame and guilt before God gets a hold of you, you can stop right now! We do not have defects of character, are not full of shortcomings, and we certainly are not powerless! On the Contrary, we are all the same, we are all connected, and we all have the same power to change!

Step Four: Awaken the Power within

Whether you want to admit it or not, all of the pain you have been through concerning your habitual behavior is a spiritual lesson. And until you view it as such, it will continue to cause you suffering and unhappiness. Every dark cloud does have a silver lining, and if you look hard enough you’ll find one in this habitual situation too. However, to find that silver lining you must ask the right questions;

1. What can I learn from my addiction?

2. How can I grow from it?

The answers to these questions can be found in a place that is uncharted by most, and it is just waiting to be explored! It’s called your true self! To embark on a journey of Self -reflection requires the practice of Mediation.

For more information on mediation you can visit my website below.

Step five: Practice Acts of Random Kindness

Happiness is a state of mind. Individuals that are suffering from addictive behavior are not happy! Ironically, in an attempt to find happiness, they chose a vehicle to mask their emotional pain through the use of alcohol, illicit drugs, and various other compulsions. However, happiness is never found on the outside in material possessions or in the abuse of substances and compulsions! True life happiness can only be found in one place, and that place is within! Happiness is not found in the practice of outward ideals or in other people. To the contrary, it is actually the small acts of random kindness that opens the heart and fuels the principle of unconditional love!

To practice spirituality is to be of service to your fellow man and make no mistake about it that is why we are all here. Begin with small acts of kindness such as opening a door for someone, letting someone go before you in the checkout line or just taking the time to offer a kind word to an older person or a child. You get the picture! The first thing I do upon waking in the morning is think of how I can be of service and throughout the day I am always mindful of opportunities that present themselves for me to do just that. You know, the paradox of the whole thing is that the more kind and generous you are the more love, kindness and abundance you’ll receive back. Don’t believe me! Just try it and watch what begins to happen to you.

Finally, good luck in your quest for addiction freedom. Visit my website below to subscribe to my Free E-guide and Weekly E-Zine;

Over the years most psychologists, counselors, and addiction specialists have deemed addiction to be a disease. However, there is no pathological test that can be administered to diagnose addiction. Therefore, addiction can not and should not be categorized as a disease. So, if addiction is not a disease, what exactly is it? In my opinion, it should be classified as a behavior and moreover a choice! Now, most individuals who have experienced the painful ramifications of habitual behavior are not under any false pretence concerning the definition of addiction, although some are in denial of it. However, what about individuals who abuse substances and compulsions without experiencing the destruction of their livelihood, finances, or family life? Do these individuals have an addiction? Addiction is a behavior, and as with any type of defined behavior there exists varying degrees of severity. As an example, some individuals can drink alcohol in moderation without using it to hide their emotional pain or allowing it to destroy their family, finances, or health. So where is the cut-off point? When is it an addiction, and when is it not? To assist you with that distinction, I have compiled the following questionnaire.

Do you have an addiction? Evaluate your current behavior by answering the following yes or no questions. (If the answer to each sentence is yes give yourself 1 point)

O Do you lose time from work due to your habitual behavior?

O Is your behavior making your home life unhappy?

O  Do you abuse substances because you are shy with other people?

O Is your behavior affecting your reputation?

O Have you ever felt remorse after abusing substances or compulsions?

O Have you had financial difficulties as a result of your behavior?

O Does your behavior make you careless of your family’s welfare?

O Do you turn to inferior environments when abusing substances?

O Has your ambition decreased because of your behavior?

O Do you crave substances at a definite time daily?

O Does your behavior cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?

O Has your efficiency decreased because of your behavior?

O Is your behavior jeopardizing your job or business?

O Do you abuse substances or compulsions to escape from worries or trouble?

O Have you ever had a loss of memory as a result of your behavior?

O Do you abuse substances or compulsions to build up your self-confidence?

O Do you ever feel bad about your behavior?

O Do you feel that your behavior is problematic?

O Do you hide some of your habitual behaviors from others?

O Do you feel controlled by your habitual behavior?

What was your over all score?

Jot down below the top 5 things that jumped out at you from completing the evaluator? How will you change them?

1.

2.

3.

4.

Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

There are many definitions of alcoholism. The most common definition of alcoholism is that” alcoholism is a horrible disease that affects the whole person. However this definition is applicable to cancer or other dreadful disease. Alcoholism can not be defined simply as a disease caused due to prolonged consumption of alcohol. The amount and frequency of drinking will determine alcoholism.

A correct definition of alcoholism is that it is a chronic disorder characterized by some loss of control over drinking. Drinking more frequently and at inappropriate times will indicate alcoholism. Alcoholism is a common term for two disorders. They are alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence.

The medical definition of alcoholism describes alcoholism as a disease caused due to continuous consumption of alcohol. The quantity and frequency of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism will vary from person to person.

Alcoholism is related with some other terms also. They include use, misuse, heavy use, abuse and dependence. Use is a term which simply refers to a person who drinks any alcoholic products. Misuse and heavy use do not have any standard definitions. Heavy use of alcohol will vary from person to person depending upon the age, alcohol brand and so on.

Alcohol abuse is one of the serious problems which will cause poor nutrition, memory loss, difficulty in walking and liver diseases. It will also lead to mental stress, depression, fatigue, employment problems, family problems etc. Alcohol abuse will also lead the drinker in some legal problems at some point in his life. The drinker will continue to drink at this stage irrespective of his health and family problems.

Addiction to alcohol will cause alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence will cause social and work related problems. The drinker will experience the problems of shaking, sweating and nausea when he tries to stop drinking at this stage. Alcohol dependence will show some of the following symptoms:

1. Changes in tolerance level.

2. The drinker will take more alcohol to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

3. He will lose control over drinking.

4. He may spend more time in drinking and will recover from it only after long period of time.

5. He will lose interest in social and recreational activities.

6. He will continue to drink though he knows the adverse effects of drinking.

Definition of alcoholism explains the effects of this problem. Alcoholism will lead most of the alcoholics drinking heavily than the normal amount. Loss of control will happen in this stage. In fact loss of control is a clear symptom of alcoholism. As the drinker continues to drink, his body will get increased tolerance towards alcohol. Therefore the drinker will not get full content by consuming the regular amount of alcohol. He will require drinking more. Withdrawal symptoms like nausea, sweating and shaking will also appear.

Alcohol problems will vary from person to person. The severity of alcoholism will also vary from drinker to drinker. Some may experience life threatening problems. Liver dysfunction, brain disorders etc will also occur. Rightly said, alcoholism is a horrible disease. However it is possible to avoid the disease. The willingness of the drinker to quit drinking is a must for getting rid of alcoholism.

Linda Rosenberg asked:

In 2003, “Amylin,” a young mother in rural Tennessee, was very addicted to methamphetamine. After she started manufacturing it at home to maintain her addiction, she lost custody of her children. The loss of her children drove her deeper into despair and more meth use which ended up resulting in a prison sentence and permanent damage to her heart. Because of meth, Amylin ended up losing everything, including her freedom, her children, her job, and her health. However, because of Amylin’s will to change and the work of her area community mental health center to provide evidence-based treatments, everything was not lost forever.

After a 2-year prison stay, Amylin was released and entered a local drug court where she was sentenced to a 90-day inpatient treatment program. Following her inpatient treatment she was mandated by the court to continue her treatment in an intensive outpatient program. Amylin was referred to the methamphetamine evidence-based treatment and healing (METH) program at a community mental health center in Tullahoma, TN.  Made possible by a federal SAMHSA grant, the METH program provided comprehensive, evidence-based and community-based treatment services for adults who abused meth and other emerging drugs as well as helped increase community awareness and education concerning prevalence, risks and effective treatments through outreach activities. The METH program, following the Matrix Model, gave services to each participant for 16 weeks, includes 3 group sessions a week & individual therapy. It taught participants effective strategies for treating meth addiction and techniques to help them remain drug free after the program was completed.

Amylin entered treatment in December of 2006 and, without missing a session, successfully completed the program in early April 2007. A key lesson that Amylin learned was how to recognize her triggers to use methamphetamine. Amylin stated, “This program helped me learn ways to recognize triggers and how to properly deal with them. I know that when I think about using or crave meth I need to talk to someone, ‘play the tape forward’ and think about the consequences of using, or go to meetings.” The METH program helped Amylin realize that she could no longer interact with people using drugs or go to places where drugs were being used: “I know now that I can’t go to ‘those’ places with old friends and the METH Program gave me alternatives to be aware of.”

From her first-hand experience Amylin now educates everyone that she meets about the effects of drugs and alcohol. She routinely participates in panel discussions at the community mental health center, telling people new to recovery her powerful story about the consequences of drug use. Through her volunteer work she has made a positive impact not only in her own life, but in the lives of other program participants and the therapists. The strategies she has learned from the program have helped her overcome her addiction and remain drug-free. Because Amylin has changed her lifestyle and now has tools to use to deal with her addiction, she is employed, has regained full custody of her children and has remained drug and alcohol free for 49 months. Additionally, her health has improved because she now takes daily heart medication and routinely sees her cardiologist. This past spring, Amylin successfully completed drug court with no drug court sanctions In August 2008 she completed her entire sentence and is no longer on probation. Amylin’s story is a story of courage and hope, reminding us that recovery is always possible even in the most difficult of circumstances.

What is drug Rehab? This is medical and psychological form of treatment which done to treat drug dependency. Drug dependency cannot be treated without professional help and care. A patient who is addicted to drug or alcohol should have to go under a rehabilitation program.

The treatment in the drug rehab center depends on the drug to which the patient is addicted. Nowadays teenagers as well as adults are addicted to both prescription and street drugs. Most common street drugs which can cause addiction are cocaine, meth, crack, or heroin. Prescription drugs which are commonly abused by the people are oxycontin, vicodin and morphine.

The person who is addicted to drugs should be treated physically as well as psychologically. The physical treatment starts with drug detoxification. Drug detox process washes out the entire harmful chemical from the body. The patient`s organism functions better after this detoxification process. The second step after the detoxification is psychological treatment.

One of the most important parts of a treatment process is psychological therapy. The counselor tries to find the cause of the addiction problem. The patient goes under the psychological treatment on a regular basis. There are two types of sessions which are used by the counselors. The first is group session and second is one-on-one session.

Nowadays lots of rehab centers are being opened. According to recent studies and research the rehab centers are very helpful for the people fighting with addiction.

There are many people who need drug rehab program but not every addict is aware of his problem of addiction. Nowadays more and more people are finding information about drug rehabilitation programs and centers.

There are lots of sources which can give enough information about drug treatment centers. One of them is internet. Internet is an extensive source of information. There are lots of websites devoted to this topic. It is a good idea to read some articles providing important information on this topic. I have gone through many article directories which provide free cost articles related to drug addiction and other health and fitness related topics.

Nowadays every reputed rehab center has a website. These rehab centers provide a lot of information about the treatment of addiction. Most of them offer free counseling sessions. It is a good idea to visit these counseling sessions. There are different counseling sessions for the patient and the family members. As you go through the website you should read not only about the treatment technique but also about the staff members. Proper rehab center should recruit professional staff members. You should also know about the emergency care system of the center. The person suffering from addiction needs professional support and emergency care 24 hours a day.
