Four hours and fifteen minutes to enter Columbine. Two hours to enter at VA Tech and these are just the two that I know about. I’ll be researching other shootings to see if this is a trend. Is there something I’m missing here? As a parent words wouldn’t be able to describe what I’d be feeling if MY child was in a school with a shooter loose. I understand that entering an unknown situation is dangerous but isn’t this what the job is about? Protecting innocent lives as quickly as possible? I’d like to see a response from someone in law enforcement to explain whats going on here.
Still looking for a decent answer to this. Can someone explain the process? I know there are rules of engagement.

to often it seems like police response is AFTER the fact. I’m sure there are many things we don’t see and I’m not saying they are all bad at their jobs, but I’m sure many don’t want to be bother with “petty” things. If they did take care of the many “petty” circumstances that could/would have “prevented” the situation. For example in the case of the reported “stalker” Police response is they can’t take action unless the guy “does” something horrible first.
People often don’t bother reporting crimes because they instead get interrogated and are viewed as a “nuisance” by the police. Not until the news gets involved does it seem they take actions they should have in the first place.

Wearing a badge doesn’t make you Superman. The Police had best enter with a plan and some idea of where they are going instead of charging in and making things worse. If your child was in there you would be praying some cowboy cop didn’t go charging in there and shoot your kid because he was holding something and the cop thought it was a weapon. He couldn’t see it clearly as he ran in like a video or movie cop. You can’t reset this game with a quarter or a mouse click.

I see where your going, i know its hard to see, but cops can’t just go in blind, they need information, they do the best they can do. One, if they rush in, dead cops of more students lives are taken, two, at least they kind of stoped the killings.

I recall that several of the victims of the Columbine shooting bled to death while waiting for rescue. I don’t know if that might have happened at Virginia Tech, probably not since the response to the second shooting on campus was about as fast as was possible, considering that the killer had chained the doors from the inside. The time lag at V Tech was between the first shooting at the dorm and the later shootings at the lecture hall but the authorities suspected that the killer had made his escape from the campus and there was no reason to assume that he was going to create a massacre in another building a few hours later.
I should say that I’m not a cop myself but that my husband is a deputy sheriff and most of my impressions I’ve gotten from him. I do remember him saying that the cops at Columbine had acted very poorly. The Columbine Police claimed that they had prevented the two killers from getting out of the school and I remember my husband saying that if they were trying to get out at one end of the school that was when you put your men in at the other end. As it was they waited for hours before going in and several wounded victims that were trapped in the school bled to death. I have also noticed that cops seldom openly criticize other cops but in private he did not have a high opinion of the Columbine Police response.
He did say that there wasn’t much else that could have been done at V Tech and as a parent that idea scares the hell out of me and for those who think that having an armed guard is the solution you might want to remember there was an armed security guard at Columbine High school and that he ran along with everyone else.
